The Autophagy Research Center received its preliminary approval from the Council for the Expansion of Medical Education of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education on November 3, 2019. Under the leadership of Dr. Pooneh Makarem, a faculty member at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, the center was officially established in 2020 and began its activities.

 

Objectives of the Center:

  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration among clinical sciences, basic sciences, engineering, and other fields to advance problem-oriented basic and applied research.

  • Utilize committed and capable human resources to improve public health, enhance medical care, and achieve national and global scientific progress in areas related to autophagy, especially concerning prevalent diseases.

  • Attract and train talented and research-oriented students, and organize the scientific and research activities of students, researchers, and interested faculty to address societal needs and tackle major scientific unknowns.

  • Publish high-quality research articles in reputable journals and become a successful model for applied research in the country by leveraging findings from basic and clinical sciences.

  • Take new initiatives and enhance active participation in technology, drug patenting, and the development of innovative methods in autophagy research to achieve valuable products and contribute to national scientific development, employment, and revenue generation.

  • Establish collaborations with other scientific and research centers and attract external funding.

  • Participate in scientific programs and gatherings, foster effective national and international collaborations in the field of autophagy, and contribute to science-based advancement in medical, administrative, and policy-making domains.
